If you achieve a score of 550 or above, you will receive the ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist credential. This credential can be very helpful if you are looking for a position in a hospital’s physical therapy department, a physical therapy office, a rehab center, or another similar location. However, it is important to note that nurses, physical therapists, and other similar professionals are required to have a license, and you will not be able to practice in the field of sports medicine with the ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist credential alone. In fact, most states will require you to have a bachelor’s degree related to your specific healthcare profession, pass state and/or national licensure examinations, and meet other similar requirements before you begin working as a physical therapist, a rehab nurse, or another similar professional.

  • In order to take the Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist Exam, you must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited program in exercise physiology, human performance, nursing, occupational therapy, physical education, physical therapy, or another similar field; have a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; and at least 600 hours of experience in a physical therapy department, a rehab center, or another similar facility that allowed you to practice your skills in the clinical exercise field. If you meet these requirements, you may register for the exam through Pearson VUE via their ACSM website or by phone.

My education background is a BS in Exercise Science and certified through the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) as a Clinical Exercise Specialist. Usually those two are required for jobs in Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehab. I’ve seen a lot of recent job postings requiring a MS or years of experience too. Email me if you want any specifics.
