The test is non-invasive and is usually performed by affixing electrodes and pads - these are completely painless - to various parts of the patient's chest and having them sit on a stationary bike and pedal.

    Basic measurements entered during Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing are: respiratory volume and frequency, oxygen intake, carbon-dioxide output and heart rate. Having these, other parameters can be determined such as minute volume, gas exchange rate and breath equivalents for oxygen and carbon dioxide.
