The link between cancer and exercise is not “junk” science. A sedentary lifestyle increases your cancer risk, leads to obesity, and is a primary risk factor in many other life-threatening diseases.
Cancer exercise specialist Carol Michaels is the founder and creator of Recovery Fitness®, , a cancer exercise program designed to help cancer patients recover from surgery and treatments. She has been a fitness professional for more than 15 years. Carol received her degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She is certified by The Cancer Exercise Training Institute, American Council on Exercise, American College of Sports Medicine, and is a member of the Society of Public Health Education.
“Strength and Courage” is a non-profit exercise program for breast cancer survivors including stretching, weight training and aerobic guidelines available as a DVD or digital file. The program was developed by Dr. Cowden a breast cancer survivor and Janette Poppenberg a Cancer Exercise Trainer certified by the ACSM/ ACS under the guidance of Dr. Kathryn Schmitz of U. of Penn. In 5 years we have distributed over 17,000 DVDS /digital files in all 50 US states & 17 other countries demonstrating the great need for exercise programs for breast cancer survivors
The following discussion on cancer and exercise will present three topic areas. The first topic area will include an overview of cancer epidemiology and pathology, cancer causes, and methods of cancer diagnosis. The second topic area will present a review of the literature on experimental studies related to exercise and cancer. The final portion of this paper will describe guidelines for the development of safe and effective exercise protocols for people undergoing treatment for cancer, recovering from cancer, in remission from cancer, or living with cancer.
